Meet Anja

As a multiracial and multicultural woman, I bring a unique and diverse perspective to my practice. Born in Tokyo and raised between Japan and Belgium, I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in the richness of two diverse cultures. My upbringing in a mixed-race family has enriched my understanding of the world, allowing me to appreciate the beauty of diversity from an early age. Growing up as an only child in a single-parent household, I also learned the value of adaptability and resilience.
Driven by a passion for psychology, I moved to the United States, where I earned my Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and furthered my education at Columbia University in 2014, obtaining two Master's degrees in Psychological Counseling and Mental Health Counseling.
Since 2016, I’ve been dedicated to providing therapeutic support to my clients. Currently, I serve as the Clinical Director of Counseling Services at a college in NYC, leading a dedicated team focused on supporting students' mental health. In 2021, I founded my private practice, where I continue to offer specialized care to individuals and couples. Additionally, I share my expertise as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology and Education to graduate students at Columbia University.
Having seen and experienced complex family dynamics and marital challenges throughout my life, I've developed a strong passion for relationship counseling. I’m committed to helping clients cultivate emotional and physical intimacy, while transforming past experiences into opportunities for growth and connection in their current relationships.
My diverse background and extensive experience allow me to connect with clients from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, helping them navigate their unique challenges. I understand the feeling of being alone, which is why I’m committed to making my clients feel seen and heard.
I warmly welcome clients from all backgrounds, identities, and walks of life, recognizing and honoring the unique experiences and perspectives each person brings to the therapeutic journey. My practice is a safe and inclusive space where everyone is respected and valued.
My Approach
I believe we all deserve to feel authentic and fulfilled in our relationship with ourselves and with others.

In my practice, I embrace a client-centered and interactive approach. I believe in creating a non-judgmental and empathetic environment where clients can freely explore their concerns, set achievable goals, and work towards personal growth. I am dedicated to empowering individuals and couples to overcome challenges and lead fulfilling lives.

Over the years, I have developed an integrative therapeutic approach, drawing upon both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral philosophies and techniques to deliver a well-balanced, holistic, and effective form of treatment to my hard-working clients. I use a warm and curious approach, but can be direct when needed. My goal is to create a safe, affirming, and empowering space for all clients to develop life-long skills and to rediscover their sense of self.
